This new exhibition brings together the work of seven UK-based contemporary visual artists illuminating what it’s like to live with a hidden disability. This project deals with sensitive topics relating to disability and identity. It is intended for an 16+ audience.
The exhibition challenges assumptions of what people with differing abilities can (or can’t) do and to promote a more inclusive culture across Hounslow and beyond.
The artists included in this exhibition each use their personal stories to show what it’s really like to live with a hidden disability from different perspectives, including the social, physical and cultural impact on their day to day lives.

Event Details
The textile industry is one of the biggest polluters, as fast fashion and global demand have eradicated traditions of mending, heirlooms and hand-me-downs.
This exhibition by London-based, Irish artist Helena Doyle highlights the global environmental impact of textile waste. The artworks on display are made entirely from waste or surplus material, recycled using traditional weaving, knotting and making techniques to show alternative ways to save cloth going to landfill.
These traditional techniques are inspired by the folk art that appears throughout history in every culture; for thousands of years people have used cloth to create objects that are not just decorative, but also protect the wearer, bring good luck or to celebrate a festive occasion. The creation of traditional or folk art is often a group activity, offering an opportunity for people to come together.
In these post-Lockdown times we now have the opportunity to come back together, reconnect and help form a culture of mending and creative reuse. This exhibition is an invitation to everyone in Hounslow to explore traditional techniques from global cultures, and experience the joy of folk art reimagined for our world today.
We will run monthly workshops throughout the exhibition, to show you how to make your own recycled pieces, and to bring Hounslow’s communities together to share, connect and create.

The project features a series of new stories extensively researched and written by Alistair Cartwright, and colourful images and stop motion animations by illustrator Amber Cooper-Davies, both of whom were selected by members of the Hounslow Exhibitions Group, which includes local people, artists and library staff.

The work starts with colour and material; folded paper and photographs that combine to create new worlds of ideas.
The collages take two forms; the digitally created, flat patterns, and the more organic handmade three-dimensional assemblages. These forms echo Noelle’s interest in the environment, both urban and natural, coming together at a threshold of shifts and changes.
Much like Hounslow’s environment that touches the city at one edge, and countryside at its other, this work explains our surroundings through connected and contrasting imagery.
The connections that can be found between the images are many, limitless, even. Colour, pattern, shape and subject intertwine together, eliminating boundaries and forging new connections. The way that things are connected, interdependent in interlocking networks draws our attention to the ecology of our environment, reminding us that humanity and nature rely on each other for survival.
The work is informed by political theorist Jane Bennett’s theory of ‘Vibrant Matter’, that everything is interconnected. Our world, whether microscopic lifeforms, or stars reaching light years across, become significant, if we choose to look and ponder with a deep curiosity.

Nominated by fellow community members, the portraits show how people come together, inspire each other, and support their friends, neighbours and the wider community.
On 24th March 2021, marking one year from the first UK lockdown due to the COVID 19 pandemic, our heroes were invited to sit for their portraits via Zoom and Facebook live. Drawn in a fun, vibrant style by illustrator Aleesha Nandhra, these digital portraits show the vast range of ways people can help each other.
Knitting, litter picking, breathing exercises, dance and volunteering were just some of the ways in which our heroes supported the well-being of others, by boosting access to activities and knowledge in their community.
The portraits were printed as postcards (and distributed to people across Hounslow), and will be exhibited in public spaces across the borough throughout 2022 in a celebration of the Citizens of Hounslow!
